My husband and I have a complicated marriage…and maybe you do, too.
You see, I like creamy peanut butter, but Lou likes crunchy.
It’s a lot to deal with, as I’m sure you can imagine, especially if you and your significant other prefer the same type of peanut butter! But I have this other friend who has the same marital dilemma, and one day, when I was in her pantry, and I pointed out her huge stockpile of EXTRA CRUNCH peanut butter (in those enormous Costco-sized two-packs), we each found this safe space to admit our repressed passion for creamy.
It felt good to be open about my preference with a fellow creamy lover because she totally understood why creamy is the best. It feels so nice in your mouth, and it doesn’t over-complicate things. It just fills your mouth with the silky-smooth flavor of peanuts with a hint of salt, and it makes everything you put it on so glossy and delicious!
But what I found interesting is that my friend and I both kindly defer to our spouse’s preference: crunchy, and in her case, EXTRA crunchy. So I brought this up with her to see what her reasoning was for giving up her preference when shopping for value packs of peanut butter at Costco. I think her reason was pretty much the same as mine:
A creamy lover can tolerate crunchy because, at the end of the day, it’s peanut butter, and peanut butter is delicious.
I do manage to enjoy crunchy, don’t get me wrong. And I should point out that Lou really likes crunchy — maybe even more than I like creamy. He loves to put it on fresh figs as an afternoon snack and the joy he seems to have when eating that crunchy topping on a fresh-from-the-tree fig is pretty darn cute. So I think I can iron out this wrinkle in our “complicated marriage.”
But my adorable and loving sister sent me a jumbo-two-pack of CREAMY PEANUT BUTTER for my birthday, and I had a spoonful of it just before I sat down to write this post, and I’m telling you — I’m experiencing total bliss right now!! My whole being is happy, and that simple pleasure just set my day off in the right direction!
If you’ve listened to the first episode of my new podcast —NERD ALERT with Sonja Bentley Zant — then you already know I’ve been trying to change up the way I build my life story in my mind, and part of the strategy I’m using is to slow down and enjoy the simple pleasures. So many things in my life still seem too big or too complex to get my arms around, and very often, it’s those larger things that get my undivided focus (or obsession, if I’m being honest).
But a spoonful of creamy peanut butter on a pretty morning?
Absolute bliss…
I know my reach with my blog and podcast is super tiny right now, but I just want to go on record here about something. Costco has a big opportunity here to do some real good in the lives of other “mixed marriages” like mine if they created their jumbo two-packs with one creamy and one crunchy! All I’m saying is this:
